Lower limb orthosis is the instrument for the whole or partial lower limb, and the earliest and widely used orthosis. In this paper, a computer-based online search of PubMed database and Chinese Journal Full-text Database was undertaken for articles dated from January 2001 to December 2007. Fifty-two articles were selected and 19 were included for reviewing. The articles introduce the classification, features and functions of lower limb orthosis, and selection of orthosis according to patient functional disturbance. The clinical effects of selected lower limb orthosis on correcting paraplegina after spinal cord injury, hemiplegia after stroke, cerebral palsy sequelae, and congenital talipes equinovarus are summarized to explore future developing trend.
